NEWARTHILL WALKING ROUTES
The brief was to design a series of pocket maps for a community walking group covering Newarthill, Carfin and Motherwell in North Lanarkshire. Funded by North Lanarkshire Council, the project involved working closely with the group’s two founders to develop a visual identity and define four walking routes of varying difficulty.
I created the maps using Mapbox GIS software and Adobe InDesign. A print run of 4,000 copies was produced on recycled paper for distribution across public buildings in the area, with the aim of encouraging active travel and outdoor social exercise.
The project also included the design and installation of waymarkers for the routes. These took the form of colour-coded thermoplastic silhouettes based on the group’s new logo and were positioned at key points along each walk. I also designed a map board for one of the woodland routes. I undertook this work as an employee of icecream architecture.
